Kids Are Our Mission
At BigToys we don't have a mission "statement" we have a mission. Our mission is to offer all children playground equipment that provides a safe, positive play experience that is also fun, exciting and most importantly developmentally appropriate. These benefits are not forced or obvious to the children playing on BigToys playground equipment. They don't consciously know that they are learning cooperation, patience and tolerance while they are also developing gross and fine-motor skills. They don't need to. But it's happening every time they play on our commercial playground equipment.
Like most responsible companies we also have "core values" that include integrity, respect and honesty. But without our child-centered mission at the heart of every piece of playground equipment we build, we would be missing the truest core value; your kids. From our concept of Balanced Play to our use of honest materials, children are at the center of every decision we make at BigToys today. We're confident this makes BigToys playground equipment an easy choice in an era of "cookie-cutter" playground equipment, and competitors who make decisions based on manufacturing costs instead of what's best for children.
Nearly four decades ago, BigToys was founded on one simple idea – all children deserve high quality outdoor playground equipment that allows them to play continuously and creatively. This idea was brought to life through the design of innovative playground equipment that addressed the whole child. This simple idea is every bit as important today as it was at BigToys’ founding.
Everyone in the extended BigToys family shares the common goal of creating wonderful playground equipment that will provide years of healthy benefit to the children in your care. We believe that all BigToys playground equipment is a result of the efforts of each of these individuals
BigToys Playground Equipment History
Founded by Chuck Kirby and Bill Cobler in 1970, BigToys is based in the Pacific Northwest city of Olympia, Washington. BigToys, Inc. is a privately held company whose owner, Tim Madeley, has been an employee for more than 25 years. Our family of employees has over 200 years of collective experience working with BigToys playground equipment and our customers.
Nearly 35 years ago, BigToys began a revolution in child playground equipment design that resulted in the development of the first modular, commercial playground equipment. These structures combined play events and activities that were traditionally separated throughout play areas. This "comprehensive" approach to playground equipment design created an environment that allowed children to interact socially and emotionally as well as physically while playing. For the first time, BigToys playground equipment offered children an opportunity for continuous play rather than forcing them to wait in line to use an individual activity. This concept has become the foundation for much of the playground equipment built throughout the world today.
Designs for BigToys playground equipment range from small to large; simple to complex and can be created specifically to provide accessible playground equipment for the handicapped. The fact the name BigToys is synonymous with playground equipment throughout the United States and Canada is proof of the positive impact we have had on play and commercial playground equipment. Ask almost any child you know what the equipment on their playground is called and they will often answer "it's a BigToy".
